You are the driver now!
You are excited. Got up early, washed the car
and packed everything ready to go. You are off to pick up
your friends and head for Victor. It’s your first big drive
since you got your P’s. It is a beautiful morning and you
are the driver now!
The drive there goes really well, you only
went the wrong way once and that was sorted easily. It was
fun. Lunch on the beach is excellent and everyone has a
great time.
While it wasn’t the plan, everyone decides to
stay for dinner at that pizza place on the corner. It’s fine
with you because you’re the driver now. You don’t have to
stick to the plan like you used to before you got your P’s.
Life is good!
Out from the pizza place and it’s raining.
When did that happen? Wind is coming up too and it’s really
dark. Guess that wasn’t really part of the plan either. Oh
well, it’s time to head home and you are the driver now!
The drive back is not quite as much fun as
the drive down, no one is talking much and you are driving a
bit slower, just to be safe. Can’t go too slowly though,
"what would your friends think".
You’ve driven lots at night; you’ve even
driven on a wet country road at night but you could only do
80 then and Dad was with you. The rain is really crashing
down now and the wind is pushing the car around like you’ve
never felt before. You are scared but what can you do? You
are the driver now!
You know every one else is scared too because
you have slowed down heaps and no-one has said a word, in
fact they are starting to chat and make jokes again. A huge
semi-trailer hammers past going the other way, the car is
blown all over the place, you can’t see a thing and someone
in the back screams. What can you do? You are the driver
now!
All you can do is
hope you learnt enough while you
where on your L’s. You think
back and you are comforted a
little. At least it’s you
driving tonight and you know
enough to slow down for this
stuff. You’d even driven your
family to Victor on your L’s and
it rained then too. It was
really worth doing that extra
stuff back then.
You stop for
coffee and a well-earned break.
Everyone is excited and talking
about when the semi went
screaming past. You did ok! You
are the driver now!
You’ve dropped
off your friends and are heading
home. You even rang to let
people know you are ok and
nearly there. Couldn’t do that
before, "what would your friends
have thought". You suddenly
realise how tired you are. Up at
6 o’clock to wash the car. Who
does that? Then the huge day out
and now it’s late at night. Wow!
You get home and
turn everything off. The silence
is amazing! You sit there just
soaking it in for a few moments.
What a day!
...You ARE the driver now!
