Tips and Training to help you prepare
for your South Australian Driver Licence Test
Licensed Drivers who come to
Australia and wish to get their first Australian Driver's Licence need
to apply at a
Services SA Customer Service Centre.
Initially all applicants for
an Australian Driver's Licence you will have to
study for and pass a Driving
Theory Test.
Drivers from some countries
are then able to get an Australian Licence equivalent to their overseas
(car) licence. Ask Services SA if this applies to you.
Drivers from other countries
will be required to also pass a Practical On
Road Driving Test (VORT) or
Competency Based Training (CBT) course.
If this applies and you have
passed the Theory Test you will be given a Temporary "Section 80"
Driving Permit.
You will be permitted to
drive on the roads provided you comply with the Section 80 conditions.
The Section 80 allows you only one month to prepare for
and arrange your Driving Test (VORT) or complete a CBT course. Most
people choose the VORT method.
Even if you believe you are an excellent
driver, it is important to have a few driving lessons to prepare for the
Test. The Test is tough and you need to meet very specific requirements.
BE WARNED.
Getting your Australian Licence is not a formality. Examiners will be
Testing to the letter of the law and if your driving is not 100% you
will not pass!
International Conversion
(and some other) drivers are subjected (at random) to a Validation
Assessment.
The Validation
Assessment will be conducted after you have passed your initial
Practical Driving Test or Assessment. It is an "audit of driving
competency" and will focus on your driving skills. This assessment is conducted by a Government Officer,
usually on roads that are not be familiar to you! Regardless of having
already passed your initial VORT or CBT Assessments, should you fail the
Validation process, you do not have a
Licence.
If you are chosen for this
process, you will be informed of the requirements when you present your
documentation to Services SA after passing your VORT or CBT Assessments.
The
Section 80 only
lasts ONE MONTH! After that you will have to get your licence like a
first time Learner Driver.
Arrange for an experienced
Drive Smart Instructor to assess your driving and help you prepare for
the Test.
