MOTOR DRIVING INSTRUCTOR (MDI) -
the career.
Becoming a Driving Instructor is a real
and truly worthwhile career choice.
If you are a people person and
enjoy driving it could turn out to be the least stressful thing you've ever done. The satisfaction of watching a new driver develop the skills,
understanding and confidence to become a good, safe driver is a
fantastic thing.
Whether you work on your own or as a
sub-contractor
the Instructor lifestyle can be brilliant.
Driver training can be a full-time
career or a part time lifestyle choice. It's up to you.
Will you make a fortune over-night?
Probably not but there is money to be made if you put the effort in.
Will you be able to choose your own
working hours? Yes, depending on how much you want to earn and client
requirements in your operating area.
Will it be challenging?
Yes but it's worth it.
Will there be changes to Road Laws,
Regulations and Government Policy that you will have to keep up with? Yes but
that's part of the fun.
Will it get boring teaching the same
stuff all the time. No! No two clients learn in the same way or have the same
training needs.
Is it recession proof? No but people
will always want to drive, get licences, upgrade their skills and go through the
re-licensing process. It could be described as more recession resistant than
some other career choices.
How do I become a Driving Instructor in South Australia?
All Driving Instructors must be
Licensed. To gain this licence you must successfully complete the appropriate
training course with a Registered Training Organisation
(RTO) and/or relevant Government Training Group.
There are three
RTO's
in South Australia that provide MDI courses. Check the list below.
There are pre-course requirements
that you must meet. Exact details of these will be available from the RTO's but
in general you will need:
-
Excellent driving skills
and knowledge
-
A strong knowledge and
understanding of Australian Road Law and Rules
-
A current Police
Clearance
-
To have held the
appropriate Australian Full licence for the last 4 consecutive years
(without interruption/disqualification)
-
Successfully complete a
literacy test as required by DTEI Transport SA
-
To pass the Pre-Course
Theory and Practical Driving Assessments through your chosen RTO.
For more information
regarding the Instructor Licensing process check out

in slightly different ways with slightly different focus. Talk to them
all, take the time to decide which suits you best.
Will the training and
assessment arrangements suit your time schedule and availability?
When do the next courses
start? Does that suit your needs?
We wish you all the best!

Drive Smart Driving
School Can Help
If you took a Driving Test today
would you pass? Would you even pass the
Learner Theory Test?
Our Pre-Course training
can help ensure your Driving and Road Law knowledge is up to standard.
We can take you through the types of things you will be expected to
teach as an Instructor. Make sure you start out knowing what you are
doing.
The Instructor Training
Courses teach you how to teach people, they aren't supposed to be
teaching you how to drive. Get the best out of the training courses.
Don't be desperately getting your driving up to standard at the same
time.
At the very least we can
help you prepare for the
Pre-Course Driving Assessment.
Call and talk to Mark or
Jenny about becoming an Instructor and how we can help you get there.
When you've qualified as an MDI -
what next?
You either team up with a Driving School
or you start out on your own or maybe a bit of both.
Your MDI course will cover lots of
ideas and options. Join and become and active member of an Industry Association.
Talk to and get to know a few people in the Industry.
Good Driving Schools will be happy
to talk to you and might even pass a little work your way while you get started
on your own.
If you don't want to go out on you
own then find a Driving School that fits your way of thinking and operating
area. Talk to them.
The Drive Smart Instructor Opportunity
From time to time, Drive Smart Driving School seeks a new Driving
Instructor to join the team.
-
Are you a “people” person?
-
Do you have passion for teaching people to drive?
-
Are you the sort of person who
looks for ways to improve what they do?
-
Are you, or would you like to be one of the best Driving Instructors in the
state?
If your answer is yes to ALL of these questions, we may be looking for you.
-
Are you looking to be a part of a professional, safety focussed driving
school?
-
Do you like the idea of being in business for yourself but not by yourself?
-
Would you prefer not to worry
about having to advertise and market yourself?
-
Do you want to earn what you are
worth?
If your answer is yes to any of these questions, you may be looking for us.
Let us look after the advertising and marketing while you focus on what you do
best – helping people become excellent drivers. Let our on going Instructor
Training and Development Program help you become better and better at what you
do.
Enjoy a team atmosphere while still remaining in business for yourself. It’s
better than doing it all on your own. Be a part of our regular team
get-togethers. Some are for training, development and sharing experiences. Some
will just be for fun and to catch up with the rest of the team.
Look around the site. Call and talk to Mark or Jenny on 08 8285 4059.
Find out what Drive Smart Driving School is about and how we tick.
If you like what you see and
you are passionate about teaching people to be excellent drivers,
email or post us your resume. Make sure your resume features your driving
experience plus teaching experience and qualifications both formal and
“informal”. Informal “qualifications” are important in this game. Include things
prior to your becoming a Driving Instructor. Were you a scout leader, youth
leader or volunteer coach for a sporting team? Did you help teach a family
member or friend to drive?
Customer relations and sales experience also helps when teaching people to
drive. You are working closely with a client helping them become the best driver
they can be. It can be tough at times. You are constantly “selling” the value of
becoming a safe, smart thinking driver.
If you don’t have much else to tell us, make sure your resume and supporting
information tells us that you are passionate about helping people become
excellent drivers.
If you are not already one of the best Instructors in the state, the fact that
you want get there still puts you way ahead of the crowd. Our training program
will help you develop all the skills and mind sets required to be a great
Instructor. We’d love to hear from you.
To make sure we can spend quality time with you we only take on one new Driving
Instructor at a time. Will you be the next “Drive Smartie”?
Drive Smart Driving School will be around for a long time. You may not be ready
to join the team now and that’s ok. Change is the only certainty in the Driver
Training Industry and the way to survive is to move with those changes. If a
future Industry change means being on your own no longer works for you, give us
a call.
See you on the road,
Mark, Jenny and the Drive Smart Team
