When teaching your learner to drive, there is no such thing as too much. Once your learner has their P Plates, all you can do is pray you did enough!
If you have a young driver in your life, think ahead to when they are driving on their own. Imagine waiting for them to come home. Perhaps it has been raining for a few hours and they are an hour late.
What will you be thinking? What questions will you be asking yourself? Will you be wishing you had done more?
How you feel when your young driver is out on their own will depend on what you do about teaching them now. One of the best piece-of-mind life investments is making sure your learner driver is safe and capable on the road.
Aim for more than 120 logbook hours. Don’t stop at the minimum. Driving in all conditions is critical. If it starts raining one evening, turn off the TV and go out driving with your learner for an hour or so. Go somewhere interesting, stop at a Cafe’ for coffee and a chat then head home. Find interesting ways to get your learner out on the road. Take a day trip to the country for lunch. Remember you are investing in their safety and your long term piece-of-mind.
Get good help
Choose a great driving instructor. Some new drivers seem quite capable but don’t really ‘have it’. They look good driving to school or work but don’t really understand what they are doing. Good instructors know if a driver has ‘got it’ or not. They take them into challenging situations then sit back and watch. Instructors see many new drivers struggling in unfamiliar situations. These same drivers seem have it all together when driving in their local area or on regular runs.
Make it a priority
If you have a family member on their L Plates, make their learning journey your priority. Invest your time. Step out of your comfort zone and normal routine to make it happen. Investing now will reduce your worries and fears later. Remember it is actually your own long term peace-of-mind you are investing in.
